Private Lessons

Develop musicianship, technique, and fundamentals of flute playing

Service Description

Being a musician is a lifelong process of growth and experience, and only a small part of that process involves learning how to play an instrument. This is the philosophy Emily brings to her teaching, whether working with beginners, amateurs, or advanced players. Originally from Ohio, Emily attended The Ohio State University for her undergraduate studies in flute performance and music education. She continued to the University of Michigan to earn her master’s degree in flute performance. Emily’s principal flute teachers were Katherine Borst Jones, Leone Buyse, and Lorna McGhee. Emily’s depth of musicianship has been fostered by many different artistic endeavors and years of additional music training in flute, voice, and harp, as well as a lifelong study of dance and contemplative movement practices in adulthood, including Alexander Technique, Dalcroze Eurythmics, RYT 200 Yoga Teacher Training, Authentic Movement, and Body Mapping. Weekly lessons will focus on the development of music fundamentals - tone, technique, intonation, rhythm, and musical expression - and may include exercises and techniques for reducing tension, bringing freedom and ease to playing, constructively managing performance anxiety, and developing authentic musical intention and expression. Repertoire selection is tailored to a student's interests, goals, and performance obligations. Regular practice is recommended according to a student's level/experience and is expected for continued growth. Private lessons are available to amateurs, developing flutists, and advanced players. Cost is $60 per lesson or $50/lesson if paid 1 month in advance. Payment may be made with cash, checks made payable to “Emily Olson,” Venmo, or CashApp. Reduced-rate options may be possible for those experiencing financial hardship. Please inquire about availability.
